Previously a lifelong Democrat, born in New York and living in New England, surrounded by liberals on all sides, I found myself slowly but surely leaving the fold and becoming that dread thing: conservative. My friends and family didn’t want to hear about my inexplicable conversion, so I started this blog to tell the tale of my political change and provide a forum for others. I have a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (not practicing), but my politics make me a pariah there, too. Little did I know that I moved in such politically homogeneous circles. Why the apple? See this.

  5. How far do I need to drill down to find an actual name or nome de plume?
Linked here by instapundit, but I lack background as to whom you are!

  6. Neo: The new picture has a distinctively Meghan Markle look about it. You could do far worse. Cheers.

  7. Kelly Lieberg:

You may notice that the last two lines of my bio say “Why the apple? See this.” There’s a link on the word “this,” and if you follow it you will find an answer to the question.

  8. There is someone using the Twitter handle ‘Neo Neocon’, but it appears to be some sort of Arab nationalist. Then there was ‘neonoecon-watch’, but he appears to have tired of the task after a month or so.

  9. I discovered your blog by following the link that Stuart Schneiderman has on his blog. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading your varied entries. It’s nice to find another woman who enjoys fashion and art as well as the intellectual pursuit of political knowledge.
Are you familiar with the organization “Better Angels”? https://www.better-angels.org I am new to the group but am helping organize an event in Wellesley, Ma. on Dec. 15th and would like to invite you.https://www.eventbrite.com/e/can-we-bridge-the-political-divide-better-angels-redblue-workshop-tickets-51352809636 I only know that you live in New England – and realize that distance alone may make it impossible.

  10. Neo … Jane you thought about the current mess in terms of the old “family systems” model? Trump speaks to the hungry dogs in the basement.

  11. I wonder how many women are out in this world today “passing” as liberals–I suspect Neo did for a long time before outing herself as conservative. There’s zero tolerance for conservatives in my little world of book clubs, museum visits, film discussions, and things intellectual, so I hide who I am so I can continue to participate in the intellectual pursuits I enjoy. Perhaps if we all weren’t so convinced we’d be shunned, we’d raise our heads as conservatives and discover there are many of us.

  12. Sounds like Princeton. Blue books, 3 hour exams, foreign math instructors.

  13. Neo, I have been reading your blog, on and off, for many years.
Thank you so very much for your voice. Keep up the good work!

  14. JoAnne:

My old blog name was “neo-neocon.” I often have posts at Legal Insurrection.

I explained the name change here, so if you’re curious I suggest you read that.

I think I will add a link in the “Bio” to that post explaining the name change.

  15. I have been following your blog for a year or so and love your work. Recently I have been digging thru your archives. In particular, A Mind is a Difficult thing to Change caught my attention and it made me think about the long road I traveled and my conversion from the dark side …
Part 7b The Vietnam photos revisited was especially enlightening. After seeing those photos while in high school, I was so angry and disgusted with the war. It made me want to become a photo journalist, a war correspondent. I wanted to be out there capturing the next war crime! I was so naive … As fate would have it, life took me in a different direction.
Reading that blog reminded me of how manipulated my generation was in the 60’s and 70’s and how the media continues to poison the minds of young people today (as well as everyone else) with their fabrication of the facts. Your final conclusion about the press having an agenda was spot on. You wrote that in 2008. Many of us are only now seeing that. Thank you for taking me back in time.

  16. SilentP’s comment about, “…conversion from the dark side,” is piercing, because that is the sum totality of our Homo sapiens species/family. We are the ones all born equally animal beings, but only some of us become and/or remain human beings, true to the human family.

  17. As some others above, I have been following you over the years too… especially as we close on elections and ideas seem to become more important. Please keep on doing what you do. I really appreciate the way you articulate ideas that I very often agree with. At one point I would have called myself a neocon or neo-neocon… I really don’t know what to call myself anymore with so many neocons having TDS… what would you call yourself these days? Maybe that’s a label I can hang my hat on too… at least for awhile.

  18. Really appreciate your voice. hard to lose friends to politics. what’s the name of your podcast?

  19. Dan K:

I haven’t done a podcast in many many years and I don’t think the old podcasts are available online anymore. Maybe I’ll start up again someday, but I have no plans to do it at the moment.

  20. “I have a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (not practicing), but my politics make me a pariah there, too.” How would fellow therapists (or even patients) know your politics unless to them everything has to be political? Hmmm I think I just answered my question.

  21. Thank you, Gringo, for your excellent post on April 8th.
I will put it to good use.
Perhaps I am Spartacus can repost his original.

  22. I always thought that I was whack because I scored in the lower left quadrant at Political Compass. And to be honest, I am whack. Now they’re coming to join me, in large numbers. I’m worried about the world.
